We have been homeschooling for a while now and I have found that anything we study always sinks in better when there is a hands-on lesson with it. The fun experiment doubles as a lesson in volcanos as well as a lesson in chemistry and reactions. Even if you don’t homeschool, this is still a fun activity that kids always enjoy.

Volcano Experiment for Kids

We’re big fans of science experiments and STEM activities. My kids love trying new science experiments. However, sometimes the classic science experiments really are the best. Like how to make a volcano for kids. Using just a few items you are guaranteed to already have around the house, this volcano is so much fun. Plus, you can keep doing the reaction over and over.

Volcano Experiment Ingredients

For this experiment you need:

  • Playdough (we used this homemade Kool-Aid playdough recipe)
  • Plastic cup
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
    • You can color the vinegar with food coloring
    • Add a couple of squirts of dish soap with the baking soda for extra foam

Ingredients
  

  • 1-2 Tablespoons baking soda
  • vinegar
  • homemade playdough
  • plastic cup

Instructions
 

  • Form homemade playdough around a plastic cup to form the volcano.
  • Add 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda to the volcano.
  • Add vinegar to the volcano.
  • You can color the vinegar with food coloring.
  • You can also add a couple of squirts of dish soap to the inside of the volcano for extra foaming before the vinegar is poured in.
