We went out to eat the other day and observed a mother out to eat with her two young adult sons. We watched as all three of them sat there looking at their phones the entire time and never said more than two words to each other! I was appalled! You go out to eat to converse right? Apparently that has become a thing of the past. It’s time to bring back dinner conversations and put a stop to the technology coming between our family bonding time!

On Sunday, June 14, Dixie launched a movement called #DarkForDinner. The movement encourages families to be more present in the moments that matter most and spend more meaningful time together, especially during dinner. In order to really appreciate the company of your family during dinner, the #DarkForDinner movement asks those participating to turn off all cell phones, televisions, computers or other electronic devices to ensure the time together is distraction free. I can’t even tell you how much I LOVE this movement.

I challenge you to join the movement and go #DarkForDinner! That means everything with a screen gets turned off and put away! Sit and gather around the dinner table and have some good old fashioned conversation! Not sure what to chat about? I’ve got something to help you! I find that with my little ones we need to have specific questions for them or they come up blank. I created this fun free conversation starters printable to get your conversations rolling!

Just print them off, cut them out and add them to a jar. Place it on the table and pass it around during dinner. You might be surprised what you learn about each other! You can print off the following conversation starters pages:

  1. Conversation Starters page 1
  2. Conversation Starters page 2
  3. Conversation Starters blank page (for you to fill in your own questions)

Then cut them up. I rolled them up around a pen so they would be easier to draw out of the jar (and look pretty and colorful too!)

Our “Family Talk” jar sits on our dinner table now and the kids ask to play it every night. They absolutely love it and I love the distraction free dinners! It’s truly a bonding time and we’ve learned so much about each other that we might never think to ask about otherwise.

  1. This is a great idea. We are about to move into our new house at our next base. We don’t really sit at the table. We just watch TV or a movie while eating, and I don’t like that idea. I want to sit at the table, but we always feel like we are running out of ideas. I am going to try this idea! Thanks for sharing!

  2. This is awesome! I’ll admit that we don’t really eat around the table for dinner (we all go off into our own rooms) but this is a great way to encourage dinner talk. These would also be great for ice breakers <3

  3. I have observed that in restaurants, too. Families or couples would sit, order and go back to using their phones. It makes me sad that they barely talked to each other. This is a great tip.

  4. We eat together every night, and the rule is that there are no screens at the table (it also means that the TV is paused or off, and out of sight). Honestly, I don’t know how I’d be able to touch base with all of the kids if we didn’t eat together! With all of us going separate directions every day and evening, dinner is the only time we have to connect.

  5. I really love this idea! Sometimes dinner convo topics can be hard for us with a 3 year old, but some of these are perfect 🙂

  6. This is a great idea. It is hard to get everyone to the dinner table sometimes. For kids this is a grand idea. I like that it is colorful and it’s something that everyone in the family can enjoy.

  7. Cute idea for dinner! My 5 year old is super talkative but I’m sure once he’s in his preteen years that this would be of use!

  8. We’ve always shut it all down around here too. I just sort of randomly decide TV off, computers off, cell phones put away, throw on some tunes and we’ll go hours with dealing with just each other…as it should be 🙂

  9. It is such a shame how some families are these days, in my parents house we always talking to each other even at each other but never on the phone when it’s family time and I hope to bring that to my own home too

  10. I have seen that a few times and it always drives me crazy. I am thankful that we don’t have that problem. We talk a lot with each other.

  11. Cute idea! We don’t eat dinner together as we work opposite shifts in my house, but in a “normal” family that was actually home at the same time, I think it would be a great way to connect!

  12. What a great idea! I’m not glued to my phone, and I’m glad that most of my friends aren’t either. It’s so sad that people aren’t talking to each other like always. Pinning this now!

  13. That’s a great idea! Luckily we are already #DarkForDinner. I am gonna use your questions to vary the questions we ask our kids before bedtime though, thank you!

  14. What a wonderful idea! I love the Dark for Dinner idea. Pair that with your conversation starters and you have a winner!

I have a link party that I am trying to grow. I invite you to share this idea (and a couple of others) at my Grandma Ideas Sharing Time link up at http://grandmaideas.com. I think my readers would LOVE this idea.

My linkup is open Wednesday through Friday at midnight. I hope to see you there!

    All the best,
    Nina
