Potty Training Hack! DIY Trick to help kids use the right amount of toilet paper! No more flooding the toilet or wasting all your toilet paper!

blog all

Anyone who has ever been through potty training their child knows what a challenge it can be to get them to use the correct amount of toilet paper. Whenever we are potty training (and for a long time after that) we go through a TON of toilet paper. I may as well buy stock in the toilet paper companies. I’ve got a money saving potty training hack for you so you can easily teach your kids the right amount of toilet paper to use!

Potty Training Hack! DIY Trick to help kids use the right amount of toilet paper! No more flooding the toilet or wasting all your toilet paper!

First off you’ll want to pick up this ginormous package of Charmin Ultra Soft at Sam’s Club. It has 1,000 FREE SHEETS in it! Woohoo! Combine this huge package of Charmin Ultra Soft with my toilet paper hack and you’ll be stocked up on toilet paper for a long time!

Now you”ll need to make a handy measuring device that will hang on your toilet paper roll holder. This will give your kids a visual guide to how much toilet paper to use. I found some fun measuring tape ribbon to use but you can use any ribbon or even yarn. You’ll also need a wood bead for the bottom to help weigh it down and help it hang straight.

First cut a point in the bottom of your ribbon so you can guide the ribbon through the hole in the wood bead.

String the bead onto the ribbon and then tie a knot below the wood bead. I also used a lighter to singe the end of the ribbon so it wouldn’t fray at the bottom. Just a quick run over the end with the flame will seal it and prevent fraying.

Next you’ll need to take your project in the bathroom and measure out the amount of toilet paper you want your kids to use. Allow enough extra ribbon to tie it to the toilet paper holder. Cut the ribbon and tie it off on the toilet paper holder, ensuring that it measures the correct amount as it hangs.

Now your kids can unroll the toilet paper and stop at the wood bead. Once it gets to the bottom of the ribbon they will know to tear it off and not take any extra. Show them how it works and how to unroll the toilet paper until it gets to the bottom of the ribbon.

Mine would most definitely be longer than yours because we need more TP than that, but I love the concept of this.

How much toilet paper is “enough” for a toddler to wipe his bum?

Okay, does this trick work with full grown men? I swear we go through toilet paper like nobody’s business, and I am stingy when it comes to my Charmin!

My kids aren’t potty training anymore. They could probably still use this though. They waste so much toilet paper.

That is such a clever idea. Not only will the kids learn not to use too little or too much toilet paper, they’ll be learning numbers and how to measure.

Is that a regular tape measure or was it made. I like the fabric.
