DIY Mason Jar Utensil Holder

This week I’ve been having a blast creating DIY 4th of July decorations for our cabin! This DIY mason jar utensil holder turned out so cute so I had to share it with all of you!

 

Every 4th of July we celebrate our freedom with great food, red, white and blue decorations and our favorite family and friends. For our celebrations this year I made this blue star-spangled mason jar along with two red mason jars and topped them off with some nautical rope. These are the perfect holders for plastic utensils, paper straws and more! They are SO easy and inexpensive to make too!

If you don’t have big plans for 4th of July then celebrate with your family! We made these M&M cookie bars yesterday and we also made some really cute mason jars for sparklers and such that I will share with you next! The kids loved those!

 

Mason Jar Utensil Holder

I LOVE mason jar crafts and surprisingly I hadn’t chalk painted mason jars yet! I know, I couldn’t believe it either. We had these adorable chalk painted mason jars in my girls bedroom makeover but someone else made them for my daughter. I was happy to find that chalk painting mason jars is really easy and fun!

Supplies Needed:

• 3 wide mouth quart mason jars
• red and blue chalk paint (this stuff)
• 2 foam paintbrushes
• nautical rope (this stuff)
• hot glue gun and glue
• white permanent vinyl or star stickers
• red plastic cutlery, blue plastic cutlery, paper straws, etc.

 

How to Chalk Paint Mason Jars

I used the wide mouth, quart-sized mason jars. I used this chalk paint in blue and red. First, clean the jar with rubbing alcohol. Then, use a foam paintbrush to brush on the chalk paint. Apply 1-2 thin coats of chalk paint and allow to fully dry.

 

 

Next, use a hot glue gun to attach nautical rope (I used this rope for just $1!) I went around the jar twice and then joined the ends on the back of the jar.

 

 

Next, you need to add stars to your mason jar. You can do this a number of ways:

• buy star stickers
• use a stencil and white chalk paint to paint them on
• use a cricut to cut white vinyl into stars

I used my Cricut Maker to cut white stars from permanent vinyl. You can have the free cut file here. Open it in Design Space and then cut the stars. You can hide the “Life is better at the lake” text as this file contains free cut files for both projects.

Once you cut them, weed them and apply to the blue mason jar utensil holder.

 

 

Now fill your mason jar utensil holders with whatever you like! I went with blue and red plastic cutlery and some cute red and blue paper straws. Then set them out to serve as functional decor!
