Woven Heart Basket Pattern & Tutorial! Create A Valentine’s Day Basket!
That’s why this woven heart basket filled with Hershey’s Valentine’s Day candy is the perfect thing for them to wake up to on Valentine’s Day! There will be a woven heart basket full of Hershey’s Valentine’s Day candy hanging on each of their bedroom doorknobs come February 14th! How would you like to wake up to a Valentine’s Day basket on your door? That’s the perfect way to start my day!
To make a woven heart basket you’ll need:
- Various coordinating cardstock (thicker paper) in red, pink, purple or Valentine’s Day prints. You’ll need 2 different colors/patterns for each woven heart basket.
- Scissors
- Double stick tape or glue
- Woven heart basket template (print it off free here)
- Hershey’s Valentine’s Day candy to fill your basket
Fold one piece of cardstock in half lengthwise. Line up your template with the “fold line” edge on your fold. Cut around the edges first. Now cut the three cut lines while still holding the template on top of your cardstock.
Now use your second template to cut out a second piece from different colored, coordinating cardstock. Lay out the two pieces with the fold lines facing each other. The rounded edges will be the top of your heart.
Now start weaving your heart by taking one piece and weaving the first strip into the other piece of cardstock. This is the only tricky part to learn. You need to be sure to weave your paper in and out of each other so that when you open the papers at the end they will open up to form a pouch and not just be woven on the top of the paper.
You’ll be forming a checkerboard pattern and weaving your strips so they go over, under, over, under each other. Use the folded edge of the strip to weave in and out of the opposite piece of cardstock, making sure one piece always goes through the other.
For example. When the pink piece was to be woven “under” the purple I put it through the purple so the purple shows on top. Next the pink needed to be woven “over” the purple so I threaded the purple piece through the pink piece so the pink shows on top. Get the idea? Repeat this.
Once your first strip is woven push it up slightly to make room for the second strip. Weave this strip through the same way as you did the first, but making sure to alternate your over/under pattern so it starts opposite the first piece. In this example, the pink was “over” the purple for the first strip and “under” the purple for the second strip.
Keep alternating to form the woven checkerboard pattern until you are finished.
When you open your woven heart basket it should open perfectly to form a basket like this.
Now cut a strip of cardstock off one of your leftover scraps of paper and affix it to the inside of the woven heart basket to create your handle. You can use double-sided tape or glue for this.
Now the fun part!! The candy!! We picked up all of our favorite Hershey’s Valentine’s Day candy including Reese’s Conversation Cups and Hershey’s Kisses
Now fill up your woven heart basket with as much candy as you can fit inside of it!
I made one of these woven heart baskets for each of my kids as well as making them for their school teachers and our close friends and family! They were easy enough to make that it was fun to make up a whole bunch. I can’t wait to hand them all out! My daughter couldn’t wait and already handed out a few to her Grandparents and they just loved how neat they are!
With a handle they will hang nicely on a doorknob so you can surprise your kids with them on Valentine’s Day morning or even surprise a neighbor by hanging one on their door with a note inscribed on it wishing them a happy Valentine’s Day! Not only will they feel special because you thought of them, but they will feel so loved to know you took time to create something special for them!
That’s so cute. Nothing is more adorable than a project made with construction paper. There’s just something about it.
I’d love to hand out some of those cute baskets with some treats inside. The pink “xoxo” paper you used is super cute.
How cute are those baskets!? I would love to get one of those.
This is so dang adorable! I think this is a perfect project to do with my grand daughter. She’ll love it!
These are adorable! I’m going to make them for my grand kids, I know they will love them.
What a fun basket idea. I really appreciate how much I could customize it and like the fact that it’s so affordable too!
That is the best part. You can easily change colors, etc to suit anyone.
This is such a cute DIY alternative to buying a gift bag. I love how simple it is to make.
Seriously such a cute idea. Love the whole look of the basket weave. This would be super fun to do with my son.
What an absolutely adorable Valentine’s Day project! Like you said this would be such a fun thing to surprise someone with or even make these things together. So fun and festive 🙂
It is a really fun craft to try together.
This concept would be great for a variety of holidays. I can see it working well for Chrismas and Mother’s day.
This is a super fun project to do with the kids. Heck, I want one for myself !

This is so cute! The girls will have fun making this.
What a fun and easy craft for kids to make. Depending on their abilities they may or may not need Mom’s help to make some of these for giving as Valentines to their friends this year.
This is a great gifting craft to teach my kids. They have just a few classmates so it could work!
That would be a great way to give out Valentine’s for a smaller class.
This is so cute! I am not very DIY savvy so having the step by step pictures is amazing.
Thank You for the tutorial, this is really a great craft and definitely something the whole family can enjoy making!
This is such a great idea! I love the idea of hanging it on the doors. What a fun surprise for the kiddos when they get up. Thanks for sharing at Merry Monday!
