The Fall chill is in the air here in Minnesota. We already had our first covering of frost that took out some of my beautiful pepper plants in my garden. I picked the rest of the garden clean and resigned myself to the fact that Summer is over and Fall is definitely in the air. Best Beef Stew Recipe EVER!
Ingredients
- 2 pounds beef stew meat
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1 Tbsp seasoning salt
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 large onion diced
- 2 bay leaves
- 1/4 C Worcestershire sauce
- 2 C water
- 2 heaping tsp beef demi-glace
- 4 large red skinned potatoes washed & diced into bite size pieces
- 3 large carrots peeled & sliced
- 1 stalk celery diced
Instructions
- Place stew meat, flour and seasoning salt in a gallon size plastic bag and shake until evenly coated.
- In a cast iron skillet heat olive oil and add floured stew meat to the pan.
- Brown on all sides and remove, placing meat into the bottom of a slow cooker. Keep your cast iron pan hot and don't clean out remnants from browning the meat.
- Season meat with pepper, to taste.
- Add diced onion to hot cast iron pan and saute until soft, about 2 minutes.
- Once onions are soft, transfer them to the slow cooker on top of the meat.
- Now add Worcestershire sauce, water, & beef demi glace into the skillet and whisk until mixed, making sure you scrape up any browned bits in the bottom of the pan.
- Turn off the heat & set aside.
- Add diced potatoes, carrots, celery, bay leaves and Worcestershire mixture to the slowcooker.
- Cover; cook on low for 8 hours.
- Remove the bay leaves before serving.

I have never heard of beef demi-glace, but I want to try it. Your recipe for Beef Stew looks delicious. The last time I made Beef stew it was awful-to watery with no flavor. I will have to try your Beef Stew!!
I’ve made a decent beef stew in the slow cooker before but never thought to start it in a cast iron pan first to get that nice brown on it. This recipe is definitely on my “To Try” list now.
It really makes a great difference in the flavor.
Looks delicious and with fall right around the corner a great time for stew.
Frost already? No!! I don’t want summer to end. Of course, if it has to end, this beef stew would make a great way to warm up!
It is the perfect way warm up.
Still as hot as can be down here in Florida but I am counting down the days to soup/stew season. This recipe looks fab, adding it to my to do recipes!
The weather is starting to cool down here and this looks like the perfect dinner. I know my whole family would love it.
It is the perfect dinner for a cool night.
I love beef stew but it’s been forever since I’ve made any. Thanks for this recipe. Looks delicious.
I’ve actually never made beef stew before! I need to give it a try since it’s one of my husband’s faves.
Beef stew always reminds me of New York winters. My mom always made hearty beef stew that was perfect for those cold snowy night. Yum! Can’t wait to try your recipe.
There is nothing better than a hearty beef stew on a cold night. Let me know how you like it!
Can I find Demi-glaze at a grocery store?
You may be able to find it near the soup stocks and I belive Whole Foods might carry it. Good luck and feel free to update us if you find it!
It has been a long time since I had beef stew. This looks amazing!
Thank you. It is a favorite cool weather meal.
Sounds like a challenge! I will make a pot, well, skillet, and compare it to mine. I’ll take any excuse to eat beef stew.

my beef stew did not thicken up like your picture – not enough flour?
Possibly. You can always add a little to end to help thicken it up if you want.
Now add Worcestershire sauce, water, & beef demi glace into the skillet and whisk until mixed, making sure you scrape up any browned bits in the bottom of the pan.
Turn off the heat & set aside.
I see that it says you set this aside, but when do I use it?
Bonnie, you will use it in step 9. The recipe refers to it as the Worcestershire mixture.
Hi Bonnie!
I thought the same thing but then it says in step 9 to add Worcestershire mixture.
Also, if I don’t have the beef demi glacé could I just make my own and add that? Or would that not work?
Yes Emily, you can make your own and add to it. You may have to play a little with the amounts to get it to work for you.
I haven’t found THE stew recipe yet, I’ll definitely have to give yours a try. Thanks for sharing on Merry Monday. Pinned.
Oh boy!
Perfect for fall!

I Strongly Recommend Dr Gbogbo to you for Herpes permanent cure
Dr Gbogbo is a herbal medicine specialist who specializes in curing herpes, HIV, Fibroids, PCOS, Diabetes, Hepatitis and many more other illnesses which he can cure through his herbal medications. I have tried all kinds of drugs given to me by my Doctor in Texas when I was suffering from Full Blown Aids but none of his medication worked for me includes ARVs until I read a testimony of Dean charlotte from google how Dr. Gbogbo cured her from Herpes permanently without any side effects. I was happy and excited to try something new. I almost gave up when I learnt he was from Africa but by faith I contacted him and that was the end of my HIV. From Full Blown Aids to HIV negative. Sharing this testimony is one of the happiest things for me to do. All I did was to order his Herbal medicine from Africa and it was shipped to me by the UPS delivery company. It only took me 23 days to complete the medication, Surprisingly I did HIV test twice and tested negative. He is not popular but powerful.
I recommend Dr. Gbogbo to anyone suffering from any illness and you are looking for a permanent cure. contact him now on Whatsapp him for more information,👇👇
