Make Homemade Popsicles | Rainbow Jello Ice Pops
You can easily make your own homemade popsicles and I’ll show you how! These rainbow Jello ice pops have just 2 ingredients and the flavor options are endless!
Homemade Popsicles
You can easily make your own homemade popsicles in a variety of ways. You can make them with fruit puree, coconut water, fruit juice and more! We made them with fresh fruit pieces in these fresh fruit popsicles which were a big hit. I also have a soft spot for these frozen Jello pops that remind me of the ice pops my mom made when I was a child.
Today we decided to make some easy homemade popsicles in rainbow colors! You only need two ingredients, water and Jello mix, and making layers of colors was a lot of fun with the kids! You can make these ice pops in rainbow colors like we did or you can do them in any combination of colors. Try red, white and blue for the 4th of July, red and pink for Valentine’s Day, etc. The possibilities are endless!
How to Make Homemade Popsicles
Making homemade popsicles is really easy and although these layered ice pops take a little longer to make, they are still just as easy!
Ice Pops Ingredients
- 3 oz Jell-O packets in the colors of your choice (6-one for every color in the rainbow)
- 2 cups of cool water for each Jell-O packet
- popsicle mold (like these or these)
Ice Pops Directions
- Mix your first packet of Jell-O into two cups of cool water.
- Pour a measured amount of Jell-O water into your popsicle mold. The amount will depend on how many colors you decide to use and how big your popsicle molds are.
- Place the popsicle mold into the freezer until the Jell-O water is frozen. About an hour for each layer.
- Now repeat steps 1-3 until your popsicle molds are full!
- Finally, when you get to the last layer, you’re ready to insert the popsicle sticks into the popsicle molds. But, since we froze our Jell-O water in layers, the popsicle sticks don’t easily insert into the already-frozen layers. To fix this problem, we used the handle of a small spoon—but whatever metal thing you can find that is approximately the same shape and size as your popsicle sticks will work. Warm the utensil in hot water, then gently insert it into the already frozen popsicles. Pull out the utensil and insert the popsicle stick.
- Then freeze that last layer!
- To eat: Run the popsicle mold under warm water, and wiggle out your rainbow masterpieces!
It is very important that you wait for each layer to freeze before adding the new layer, otherwise, your colors will mix together. Alternately, if you leave the layers to freeze for too long, the layers may not stick together, and separate when you remove the popsicles from their molds.
How long are homemade popsicles good for?
Homemade popsicles will last in the freezer for a very long time! They only thing you’ll have working against you is that they can potentially begin to absorb the flavors of the freezer, as anything can, and no longer taste great. Until that happens though, they’ll last a long time!
How to get homemade popsicles out of the mold
Your homemade popsicles will be tough to get out of the mold so to make it quick and easy, just run the outside of the mold under hot water on each side until they easily release from the mold.
How to store homemade popsicles
I recommend storing your homemade popsicles in the molds you made them in. If you need to use the mold again before the ice pops are eaten then remove each ice pop and wrap individually in plastic wrap or a sandwich bag and then store all of the wrapped ice pops in a large bag.
