DIY No Sew Fabric Flip Flops - Super easy, cheap and trendy!

Our snow has finally melted and despite predictions of snow to come this week, I am looking forward to Summer! That means it is time to make sure I have plenty of adorable flip flops on hand since I practically live in them all Summer. Now is the time to make them so once those sunny rays start shining down I can sit and enjoy the sun instead of being inside working on projects! These are seriously the easiest ever DIY no sew fabric flip flops. You can easily make several pair in 30 minutes or less! I whipped up two pairs in 20 minutes. They are super easy, super adorable and super cheap to make! That means you can have them in every color! I’ve laid out easy to follow, step by step instructions for making them and after you make your first pair you’ll fly through making subsequent pairs in no time.

Fabric flip flop tutorial

First you’ll need some cheapo flip flops. I got the $1 pairs at Walmart but I like the $1 Old Navy flip flops best. You’ll also need scissors, 1/4 yard of fabric (or fabric scraps measuring 4 1/2 X 24 inches – 4 pieces), and hot glue (optional).

DIY flip flop how to

Start by turning over the flip flop and cutting off the knobs on the bottom so the rubber strap is completely removed.

Now they will look like this. Cut your fabric into four strips measuring 4 1/2″ wide by 24″ long. They don’t need to measure perfectly. If you have scraps that are slightly more narrow or a little shorter they will work. Don’t go too much shorter than 24″ though or you won’t have much fabric to work with when tying your knots. There is no need to finish the edges of your fabric by sewing the edges under. I love the fraying look! It’s completely on trend.

Then cut the ends of each strip into a point so they are easier to thread through the holes.

Now take two of your fabric strips and hold them together. Push the ends through the hole near where your toes go. Pull them through about an inch and a half so you have just enough fabric to tie a double knot.

Now tie a double knot in the fabric and pull it very tight. The knot will fit into the divot that the previous knob (that you cut off) was in. Don’t worry if it seems a little big, as you walk on it it will depress into the divot.

Once you have tied your double knot trim the tails off near your knot.

Now turn your flip flop over. Taking both strips in your hand tie a single knot about an inch or so up from the bottom of the sandal. This is the piece that will go between your toes. Tie it tightly.

Now tie a second knot in the same way, directly above your first knot. Pull it tight.

Now you are ready to create the strap. Pull each strip though the remaining two holes (1 strip in each hole).

Now you need to try on the sandal. Try it on and adjust it to fit snug. Remember that the fabric will stretch a little as you walk in them so make sure you adjust it to a snug fit. Once you have it where you want it tie a single knot in each strip.

Pull your knots tight and then trim off the ends. The knots will fit into the divots. I was worried that they would be uncomfortable to walk on if the knots didn’t fit all the way into the divots but they are not uncomfortable at all and I don’t even fell them underneath the sandal.

Now you’re done! If you don’t trust your knots you can take a little hot glue and secure them on the underside of the sandal so they don’t come untied but it’s totally optional. See I told you it was easy! Now make a few more pair to match your outfits! It’s addicting because they are so cheap and easy to make, but they look like boutique sandals!

Now I just need to shave my legs and I’ll be ready for Summer! Considering it’s only 30 degrees out today I guess I won’t be donning my shorts yet but I’m totally ready! I even found a new razor and shave gel I love. The new VenusSwirl is the best razor! It has a super cool FlexiBall™ that offers a totally unique movement like no other male or female razor on the market. Venus Swirl™ is the first and only razor with the FlexiBall™, moving in multiple directions to navigate all of the tricky areas of a woman’s body. It helps to shave those hard-to-reach places and capture hairs that other razors might miss. That means that those pesky knee and ankle hairs are easy to get the first time around! I love the way the head of the razor glides over my legs when attached to the ball. It easily adjusts for curves and does a great job leaving behind silky smooth legs! The Venus™ with a touch of Olay® VioletSwirl™ shave gel leaves my legs feeling super moisturized and smooth. Love these! Grab them at Walmart and get ready for Summer!

These are my favorite of the many pairs I’ve made so far. Check out my left toes. They are swollen and I’ve got a nice purple toe thanks to running into my fire safe in the dark. Ouch! I think the pretty pink polish and adorable sandals deflect the attention away from that pretty purple toe though!

  1. Super cute idea, not sure my back would enjoy the knots on the bottom of the shoe. I normally can’t wear thin flip flips. Bit idea is cute and fun. Love the razors, its what I use 🙂

    1. I definitely thought the knots would be bothersome but you really can’t feel them. I had my sister try them as well and she said she was surprised you couldn’t feel them at all. Once you’ve stood on them the knots push up into the recessed circle from where the rubber strap used to be. However if you can’t wear these type of flip flops normally then I’m sure you need a sandal with more support!
