Making the decision to become a stay at home mom and give up my well paying job as a Registered Nurse did not come without some sacrifices. I knew that I wanted to be home with my kids and be able to watch them grow up and not have to put them in daycare. I realize this isn’t every mothers wish and I respect that completely. If you are contemplating the decision to stay home or just looking for ways to save money I’m going to share with you some ways to save money everyday that aren’t tough to do. We have implemented these changes in our life and we certainly don’t feel deprived.
We stopped buying coffee and cappuccino as well as candy bars and treats every time we stopped at the gas station. This is the “latte factor” and adds up quickly. Say you spend $3 a day on these treats multiplied by 7 days a week is $21 and comes out to $84 a month! That is $1,008 dollars a year that you will be saving. If you are stopping at Starbucks my guess is that you spend more than $3 a day on coffee. Start making coffee at home and buying candy on sale with coupons. You will still get your treats without breaking the bank. If you can’t live without gourmet coffee invest in a coffee machine such as the Nescafe Dolce Gusto (which we love) and it will still be cheaper than stopping everyday to buy coffee.
If you have a baby in diapers then I strongly suggest switching to cloth diapers. They are not your Grandma’s cloth diapers and are easy to use and no toilet dunking required! You will save thousands over disposables and you won’t be running to the store to buy diapers and buying extra unnecessary things while you are there. I also use disposable wipes for poop only and use homemade cloth wipes for all the wet diapers. This saves a bundle on wipes.
If you like beef jerky and fruit leather then I suggest investing in a dehydrator. Both beef jerky and fruit leather are quite expensive and you will get your money’s worth out of your dehydrator in no time. Plus you can make your own dried fruit and lots more! I’ll be sharing my tips and tricks on this soon.
This may sound funny but we quit using so many paper towels. We were using them for everything and going through them like crazy. Paper towels aren’t cheap and I’m amazed at the money we’ve saved by cutting our use of them. We rarely use them and don’t miss them either. A regular towel will work just as good for most things you’d waste a paper towel on and you’ll cut down on your garbage too. Instead of spending a fortune on buying all new trendy clothes for yourself, invest in some trendy jewelry pieces. These will update a plain top and add a lot of style for a small investment. It is easy to change your accessories and spruce up your wardrobe.
