This magic reindeer food recipe isn’t meant to eat, but to throw out in the yard for Santa’s reindeer on Christmas Eve! My kids always look forward to putting out cookies and milk for Santa and tossing out magic reindeer food and carrots for his reindeer! Those reindeer have to fly Santa all around the world in one night and they certainly deserve some good snacks along the way!

For each packet of Santa’s magic reindeer food mix together 1/2 cup old fashioned oats, a dash of sprinkles and two good shakes of red and green edible glitter. Mix it together in a small bowl.

Transfer it over to a clear bag (I used these clear party bags) and roll the top down to close it.

Then print off these adorable FREE magic reindeer food bag toppers which have the poem printed on one side. I recommend printing these on a thicker cardstock paper like this one.

On Christmas Eve sprinkle these on the lawn and toss out some carrots too so the reindeer have a nice snack on their busy night! The reindeer food poem reads:

Sprinkle on the lawn at night,

The moon will make it sparkle bright,

as Santa’s reindeer fly & roam,

this will guide them to your home!

  1. This isn’t so cute! We usually put out carrots or oats for the reindeer on Christmas Eve!! I love this idea.

  2. This is so cute! My daughter and son would love to make this and put it out for Santa’s reindeer! Such a cute idea!

  3. should not use glitter …harmful to birds and wildlife and irresponsible. Do your homework before you put stuff out on blog!

          1. You can make your own edible glitter and it is just sugar with food coloring that you cook until it dries and sparkles. There are plenty of how to’s on Pinterest.

    1. I did this with my children for years. The youngest is now 21. But even back then you can get edible type sprinkles some a little sugary and others just made out of starch. You can also toss in colorful birdseed from a feed n seed store. Stop trying to killjoy the kids fun, it’s super easy to make this “eco friendly “. FYI I also did this as treats in the goody bags they take home from school Christmas parties. Lots of parents loved the non sugar high treat that was still fun for the kids. It’s very economical to do this and we added a ginger bread boy individually wrapped from little Debbie cakes. Always a hit. Merry Christmas everyone.

  4. The glitter gets down into the grass and does no harm to anything😉 We have been doing this for DECADES. It simply blows away.
We do it in our front yard, towards the street – where it gets most wind, and Sun, better chance to wash away. They throw up in the air
So glitter separates from oat’s as they fly down.😉 We don’t do in BACK yard where our animal’s stay because our Beagle would eat all tahe oatmeal😨. Just enjoy and have fun🌲

      1. edible glitter is simply sugar with food coloring that is cooked until it dries out and shimmers. It doesn’t harm oceans or wildlife. If you need something to worry about or a cause to champion this is not it! Just enjoy Christmas

  5. It also says in the recipe, edible glitter so how is that going to harm?
I think this is such a cute fun thing to do, I am doing this with my daughter this year and every year after this!
