Although the summer has so far been pretty rainy in Texas, my family is trying to spend as much time outside as possible. We recently planted some trees, and our very first vegetable garden. I am trying to make a comfortable outdoor living space to entertain guests, and enjoy ourselves.

Needless to say, I spend too much time on Pinterest trying to find ways of beautifying our outdoor space without having to spend a lot of money. So when I saw this birdseed wreath on Pinterest, I knew I had to try it.

Since putting it in our backyard, I’ve woken up to birds chirping early in the morning; I must say, it’s a very soothing way to wake up. I will undoubtedly be making this again, probably for some birthdays, since I have so much leftover birdseed. The overall cost was about $5 per wreath.

materials

Materials:
*Birdseed
Knox gelatin (about $2)
Water
Pie tin [or bundt pan] (about $2)

*There are about 20 cups in 10 pounds of birdseed, and I used 2 cups. So that’s a dollar of birdseed per wreath.

step1

1. The amount of gelatin and water you’ll use depends on how big your mold is. I used a disposable pie tin, so I only used one packet of gelatin. Mix one packet with ¼ cup of cold water. Let the gelatin sit, and then add 1/3 cup of boiling water.

step1(2)

Stir it until all of the gelatin dissolves and then add 2 cups of birdseed.

step2

2. Transfer the birdseed mix into the mold and smooth it all out. Then, put it in the refrigerator for a few hours. I let mine sit for 6 hours, then took it out to harden overnight.

step3

3. The following morning, the mixture should be completely hard and easy to pop out of the mold. Hang it from a wide ribbon or piece of fabric and watch the birds flock!
