Many new moms make the mistake of buying the wrong size nursing bra, choosing the wrong fit or just plain have questions about nursing and what they should know. I had an opportunity to interview Amy from the Leading Lady team concerning nursing bras.
Amy is a Registered Nurse, Certified Lactation Consultant and, most importantly, super mama of seven. Together with the Leading Lady team, Amy works to ensure new and nursing moms are armed with the support – physically, intellectually and emotionally – they need to nurture their babies through breastfeeding.
Many Moms are wearing the wrong size bra. What is the best way to determine your perfect size?
Proper fit is so important — for comfort and in order to maintain good breast health. You definitely need to be fitted for a new bra as soon as your current bra starts to feel uncomfortable, too tight or too loose. Leading Lady has created a handy fit calculator and printable measuring tape to help make this super easy for you!
Keep in mind these are just starting points. It is important to try on bras to find a fit that is comfortable on you.
Whether or not to wear an underwire nursing bra is a matter of personal preference. And frankly some women need the added support that an underwire provides them! Regardless of the style a nursing mama chooses, proper fit is very important.
Nursing mamas who choose to wear an underwire should not do so while sleeping. Many nursing women may need the extra support through the night, but a leisure bra is most comfortable to sleep in. They are made of soft, stretchable fabrics, as are Leading Lady’s selection of camis, chemises, and sleep wear. So whatever style you select, Leading Lady has you supported from morning til night.
What is the single most important thing to look for in a good nursing bra?
Fit, with comfort and accessibility coming in a close second and third. The type of nursing bra you purchase should be based entirely on your personal preference, but any style you chose should fit properly, be comfortable to wear, and provide easy access for nursing.
I was sent Leading Lady’s Cotton Front-Closure Leisure Bra to test out. This is the bra that I’ve been sleeping in and lounging around the house in. It is really comfortable and I like how easy the front closure makes it to put on. It holds my nursing pads in place all night long and provides easy access nursing by uncliping the bra and moving it aside. It comes in 5 different colors and is now my go to nighttime bra. It’s on sale right now for $18.70!
I’m a huge fan of nursing cami’s because they can be worn alone or layered and when you are wearing one you don’t have to lift your shirt and expose your back and belly in order to nurse. I tried out the Shirred-Front Striped Nursing Tank from Leading Lady and I really like it. It gives me good support and provides easy access to nurse. It is really comfortable. This cami is also on sale right now for $19.20, down from the regular price of $32! This would make a great Christmas gift for the nursing mama on your list this year!
Why we love it: The leisure bra and nursing tank were both very comfortable and provided easy access to nurse my baby.
Suggestions for improvement: I’d love for the nursing tank to be a bit more fitted. I found the fit to be a little wide throughout the body. The leisure bra is very comfortable but I found it easier to just pull it aside to nurse rather than opening the front closure and trying to open/close it with a baby in my arms.
